DIY Puffy Paint Recipe With Just 3 Simple Ingredients
This DIY puffy paint recipe is so easy peasy and oh so much fun! Painting with puffy paint is one of my toddler’s favorite ways to be creative and explore with process art! He loves to mix it all together, especially once we add in the dye. He gets mesmerized by the color swirling around and seeing the shaving cream puff up and become colored. What is extra cool about puffy paint is that once it dries it is such a fun texture! It feels sort of pillowy and my toddler loves to feel it and poke at his creation once it is dry.
This incredibly easy recipe includes just three ingredients that you probably have lying around. Ready to hear it? Shaving cream, glue and food coloring! Bam! Done. What’s even better? Just mix it all together and voila! You’ve got yourself some fluffy puffy colorful paint!

Ingredients for DIY Puffy Paint:
- 4 Parts shaving cream
- 1 Part glue (I used Elmer’s Glue)
- A few drops of food coloring (you can use gel or liquid drops both work great)
- Container for mixing
- Paint brush (we have this set which is pretty awesome)
Confession here…I never actually measure out how much shaving cream and glue I am using. If you’re a person that craves exact amounts- try 1 cup of shaving cream and ¼ cup of glue. This will make quite a lot. I would recommend separating it into two different containers before adding in the food coloring so you can make two different colors out of it.
*PLEASE NOTE* glue is used to make the paint denser. If you want the paint to dry puffy and raised then don’t go too heavy-handed when pouring out the glue.
Directions:
- Start by putting the shaving cream in the container.
- Then add the glue and mix it all together.
- Once thoroughly mixed, add in the food coloring. The more drops you add, the more vibrant the color will be.
- Grab your paintbrush and get started!
- Share your finished products in the comments below- I’d love to see all of the beautiful creations your little ones make!
