Painting With Water- Toddler & Baby Sensory Play Idea

Painting with water is one of the simplest activities to set up! It’s also one that my kids have been doing since they were very little and it never gets old. ⠀

Using cotton swabs, cardboard and feathers to paint with water.

I have been trying to plan activities for Hannah & Jackson while I breastfeed Lilah (which you mamas know can be time consuming). Nursing hasn’t been the easiest with 2 toddlers running around and it has me wondering about ways to keep them occupied.

I personally dislike having to rely on TV to keep my kids entertained. Do I turn it on sometimes? ABSOLUTELY! I mean, come on we all need to throw the TV on every now and then. I just choose to avoid it as much as possible though because Jackson gets too zombie-like when the TV is on and Hannah doesn’t really care about watching it anyway. So even when the television is on, Hannah still needs entertainment. So what can I do?

Well, I’m having to feed Lilah every two hours in an effort to get her weight gain to speed up a bit. Having to feed her every two hours pretty much feels like there’s no break in-between. You know the feeling, mamas! We need activities that are simple to set up yet fun enough to keep our kids’ attention. This painting with water activity is definitely a great solution to that problem!

Painting with water is great because you don’t have to worry about a huge mess occurring. Well… unless they decide to dump the water bowl (which inevitably happens every now and then). However, even if water spills everywhere, it’s only water! Just grab a dish rag, wipe it up and carry on with the activity.

Here’s a little tip…

Determine how much water you would be willing to have spilled all over your table. Fill the bowl that amount so that if your little one does indeed accidentally knock it over, it’s all good. ⠀

Painting with Water Setup:⠀

Painting with water- tools to use
  1. Grab some cardboard, cardstock or construction paper (cardboard is great because you can let it air dry and then keep reusing it!) ⠀
  2. Gather some painting tools together.⠀⠀
  3. Get a little bowl for the water.

What “painting tools” can you use?⠀

For babies (around 10+ months):

Babies can simply use their hands. It will be so fun for them to dip their hands/fingers in the water and then drag it around on the paper. ⠀

For toddlers:

Be creative! Get out paint brushes, cotton balls, cotton swabs, paint rollers, sticks, craft pompoms, pipe cleaners, etc. ⠀

*Adult supervision is required for babies/toddlers with this activity of course*

You and your little ones should definitely try out this simple yet fun painting with water activity!
