Rainbow Oats- How To Make Them For Your Sensory Bin
August 6, 2020
Sensory play and sensory bins are all the rage and for a reason! They are so much fun for your little ones and provide great tactile stimulation. They are exploring their senses and building imaginative play all at the same time. We have used so many things in our sensory bins but this week we wanted to make some rainbow oats!
*F.Y.I.*
I would like to proceed with a little warning for you folks first. Do not mix them up in a zip-locked bag! Oh my goodness- disaster! The oats got pretty soggy and the food coloring sort of just clumped. So, mix them in a bowl- please! With that said, check out the recipe below!
Rainbow Oats Ingredients:
Rolled Oats (1 cup per color that you want to create)
Food Coloring (regular liquid drops or the gel) (I think the regular liquid drops would be better)
Water (2 Tbsp.)
Directions:
In a small bowl mix together the water and food coloring. Make sure to mix it very thoroughly if using the gel food coloring.
Next, place the oats in a medium sized bowl and then pour in the water/food coloring mixture.
Use a baking spatula to mix it all together. Mix nice and slow (folding the oats over to stir). If you mix too fast, the oats will break and turn to crumbs.
After the oats are evenly coated/colored, lay them out on a paper towel on a baking sheet.
Then repeat these steps for each color that you want to create!
After all of the colors are laid out to dry, leave them there for a few hours or overnight to dry thoroughly.
How long do rainbow oats last?
Years! Just keep them in an air tight container!
